E. Pluribus Hangman[1], or the Hangman is a fictional narrator of the Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales graphic novel series by Nathan Hale. He is an executioner ordered to execute the Spy, Nathan Hale for the British Army. After witnessing Nathan being devoured by the Big Huge Book of American History, Hangman decides to listen to and narrate Nathan’s stories from American History.
He is a lighthearted and comedic man who loves bad jokes[2], cute animals, and sandwiches. He has a passion for toilet-jokes, having a laughing fit in Major Impossible.
Appearance[]
Physical Attributes[]
Hangman is relatively short, he is estimated to be 5 '4 (1.64m); his body is large. In the Hazardous Trails blog post on Nathan Hale’s blog[3], Hangman’s skin tone is a light tan color, but in the books, he’s white. He also has a “pungent” odor[2]. He has some facial hair on his face, which he refers to as a “noon o’ clock shadow”[2], as well as some chest hair. In One Dead Spy he shows off a comic panel-shaped birthmark on his chest to Provost and Nathan Hale[4].
Clothing[]
Hangman wears a black greatcoat without buttons, as he lost the buttons in a low stakes card game[2]. His greatcoat is held together by his belt, whose belt buckle supposedly belonged to the 1600s executioner, Jack Ketch[2]. He wears black breeches made of wool that are slightly puffy around his legs[2]. His head is covered by an executioner’s cowl, which is tied in the back for dramatic effect, and his nose is protected by a nose guard[2]. He wears heavy gloves on his hands[2]. Hangman has two boots, his left boot was found near the aftermath of the Battle of Bunker Hill, and his right boot was a gift from a one-legged prisoner[2].
Biography[]
E. Pluribus Hangman comes from a long line of Hangmen, following his Great-Great Grandmother Gobroalthia’s legacy[5]. At some point, Hangman was put in a shipwreck, and cannibalized the cook on board the ship[6].
Personality[]
- "The Hangman is the most, er, simple minded of the Hazardous Tales narrators. He is known for his curiosity, his knack for bad jokes, and his love of cute and cuddly animals."
- ―“Meet the Hangman” Character Sheet
The Hangman is a lighthearted and childish person. He is very sympathetic towards life, despite his status as an executioner. Such as when Nathan Hale is about to be executed in One Dead Spy, where he helps Nathan come up with his last words, as well as showing sympathy towards Nathan[4]. In Donner Dinner Party, he is severely saddened by the deaths of Billy and Cashy[6].
